The Sleepy Dragon's Starlight Wish

Once upon a time, Kaira, in a valley so peaceful it seemed to whisper secrets to the breeze, lived a dragon unlike any other. His name was Faelan, which meant 'little wolf' in an old, forgotten language, and he was covered not in daunting scales, but in gentle, downy fur the color of twilight amethyst. He wasn't much bigger than your cozy bed, and he certainly wasn't fiery or fierce. Faelan loved quiet things: the hum of bumblebees, the soft rustle of leaves, and most of all, the twinkling, whispered stories of the stars.

Every evening, as the sun dipped its last golden toe behind the tallest peak, Faelan would trundle out of his snug cave, a little yawn stretching his velvet snout. He'd find his favorite spot on a mossy, sun-warmed stone, and patiently wait. He wasn't waiting for an adventure, or for treasure, or even for a snack. No, Kaira, Faelan was waiting for the first star to appear, a tiny diamond pricking the deepening blue.

· · ·

Tonight, the air was particularly soft, like a kitten's purr. A faint scent of honeysuckle drifted on the lightest breath of wind, tickling Faelan's sensitive nose. He closed his eyes for a moment, enjoying the cool underside of the stone against his belly and the soft breeze ruffling the lavender fur along his spine. Then, a shiver of light caught his eye. There it was! Vega, the first shy star, peeking through the last blush of sunset. Faelan let out a soft, contented sigh, a sound like dried leaves tumbling gently down a hill. He imagined Vega, so far away, winking just for him.

As more stars began to emerge, one by one, like tiny lamps being lit in a vast, dark room, Faelan felt a familiar warmth spread through his chest. He loved to imagine stories for each star cluster. That shimmering ribbon there, was it a sleepy river of stardust? And those three bright ones, were they a family of glow-worms, exploring the velvet sky? Kaira, Faelan felt so connected to the quiet magic above, he wished he could gently touch just one of those luminous, far-off lights.

Tonight, however, Faelan felt a little fluttery wish growing in his heart. It wasn't a demanding wish, but a soft, shimmering one, like a soap bubble dancing in the air. He wished, just for a moment, to feel the gentle coolness of a star upon his paw, to know what it truly felt like. He knew it was a Silly Wish, as his wise, old reflection in the mountain stream sometimes told him. Stars were too far, too grand. But still, the wish twinkled deep inside him.

He watched a particularly bright star, which seemed to pulse with a gentle, patient light, perhaps it was Altair. Faelan imagined reaching out, just reaching with the tip of his soft, amethyst-colored paw. He closed his eyes, and a slow, deep breath filled his chest. The honeysuckle smell grew a little stronger, and the air around him seemed to hum with a tiny, drowsy song.

When Faelan opened his eyes again, the valley was truly dark, illuminated only by the extravagant tapestry of stars above. The air felt… different. It wasn't cold, but it had a distinct freshness, like mountain air after a soft rain. And then, he felt it. A soft, almost imperceptible coolness, no bigger than a dewdrop, rest upon the very center of his right paw pad. He looked down, his wide, gentle eyes blinking slowly.

There, nestled in the soft fur, was a single, tiny, shimmering speck. It wasn't melting, or burning, or even moving. It just sat there, glimmering with a faint, internal light, like a sleeping firefly. It felt unbelievably gentle, like the lightest feather, and cool, like a tiny drop of fresh spring water. Faelan slowly, carefully, brought his paw up, holding the speck close to his nose. It smelled not of anything he knew, but of vast, quiet spaces and ancient, patient time. It was a fragment of starlight.

· · ·

Faelan held his breath, savoring the feeling. It was not a boisterous, exciting feeling, but a deep, comforting quietness, as if the star had brought a little piece of the night's hush down for him. He remembered his wish, Kaira, and a slow, warm smile spread across his sleepy dragon face. Even though he didn't understand how it happened, or where it came from, he knew deep in his heart that somehow, the night had heard his softest longing.

The little speck of starlight pulsed with its own gentle beat, mirroring the slow, steady rhythm of Faelan's drowsy heart. He watched it for what felt like a long, peaceful age, until his soft eyelids began to droop, growing heavier and heavier. The coolness on his paw was a perfect lullaby, a silent whisper from the cosmos, inviting him to rest deeply. He curled his velvet snout under his paw, protecting his precious, sleeping star, and let out the softest, most contented sigh he had ever breathed.

· · ·

The valley seemed to hold its breath with him, the ancient trees bowing slightly in the softest breeze, and the river murmuring a gentle, hushed tune as it flowed over smooth stones. Faelan snuggled deeper into his mossy bed, the warmth of the day slowly leaving the stone, replaced by the cool, comforting embrace of the night. The scent of honeysuckle still danced faintly in the air, weaving its way into his dreams. The little star, nestled safely in his paw, seemed to pulse ever so softly, its light a faint, rhythmic beacon in the deep, calming darkness. He felt so wonderfully tired, so utterly peaceful, knowing that the vast, silent beauty of the night had found a way to touch him back, to answer his quiet wish with a whisper of its own. He drifted further and further, his breathing deepening and slowing, his body becoming soft and heavy, feeling the gentle cool touch of a dream, even before sleep fully arrived.

And Kaira, as Faelan finally drifted into the deepest of sleeps, with that tiny, shimmering dream-sparkle held close, I wonder what kind of starlit dreams he dreamt that impossibly peaceful night, and if perhaps, a little piece of that soft, cosmic magic might just twinkle in your dreams too.

✨ Sweet dreams. ✨
